Happy World Book Day: 5 Easy Ways to Celebrate

When was the last time you read a good book? If you are not able to recall, you are not alone. In 2022, the Global Books Market was valued at USD 140.85 Bn and is expected to reach USD 173.83 Bn by 2030 at a CAGR of 2.56%

However, as per the National Literacy Trust’s Annual Literacy Survey, just 34.6% of young people in the age group of 8 to 18 years enjoyed reading in their spare time last year. As modern technology serves as a constant source of distraction, it might be challenging to include reading in your daily routines.

If you’re missing the smell of a brand-new book or simply want to relive the satisfaction of finishing a book, World Book Day is an ideal day to honor literature, creativity, and the love of reading.

The History of World Book Day

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has declared April 23 to be World Book Day since 1995. This yearly festival was chosen by UNESCO, bringing attention to the pleasure of reading in more than 100 nations. And there’s a rationale. George R.R. Martin, the renowned author of “Game of Thrones,” once remarked, “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… the man who never reads lives only one.”

Why not celebrate this “World Book Day” in a unique way? Check out these unique ideas to celebrate this special day:

  1. Give Someone Your Last Read Book: There is nothing better than giving a book to your friend or family to mark this special occasion. While there are moments when you want to just keep that book you have previously read, since it reminds you of a particularly enjoyable vacation or got you through a challenging period. Gifting someone your last red book is not only a beautiful gesture, but it also gives the story more life than just a stack by your bedside table.
  2. Play games with a book theme: Organizing a game around books is a great way to get your pupils to guess the title of a book. You can easily download it by doing a fast internet search. You can also think about making a book scavenger hunt to make it a little more engaging.
  3. Visit the library: Nothing fosters a love of reading like a visit to the library. So, this book day, plan to visit a library and set up a “tour” or interview session where students may ask their librarian about their favorite books and careers. Additionally, you can promote going to the public library in your community.
  4. Organize a live author reading: Read-alouds make novels come to life, and they are enhanced when the author reads aloud. You can ask your local children’s book store for assistance or use Scholastic’s advice to set up an author visit at your school. The age-old question of whether a book is better than a movie is up for your class to determine! After reading a book together, see the film (maybe with some cinema snacks included). After that, the class can vote on it.
  5. Read, read, read: This “World Book Day” creates a new hobby of book reading. However, you cannot develop a passion for reading unless you take the time to become familiar with a wide variety of books. Your pupils might not be thrilled with the present course choices, but they might enjoy a genuine narrative about a historical figure or a work of science fiction. Consider checking out the list of recently published books by reputable authors in your preferred segment, and choose the one that suits you.

These are some unique ways to make this “World Book Day” memorable. You can go with any of the ideas shared above, as per your convenience. Build a book-reading habit to gain knowledge while staying calm and relaxed. In the upcoming holiday and vacation, add some new books to your personal collection and enjoy reading!
