Better to Shop From Mobile Apps or Websites

Is It Better to Shop From Mobile Apps or Websites: 6 Things to Consider

As mobile apps become increasingly prevalent through the years, more businesses and e-commerce platforms are now starting to branch out from just having websites to launching apps for their brands as well. This development comes as no surprise, seeing as how Filipinos are more likely to access the internet using their mobile devices than computers. In fact, a 2023 report from data gathering platform Statista noted that an average Filipino internet user spends around five hours daily using mobile internet. This can naturally extend to using mobile shopping apps.

Another reason why e-commerce apps are gaining popularity is because they also complement the rise of digital payment options, making transactions safer and more convenient. Using an e-wallet or a credit card, you can now pay for your online purchases in just a few seconds. The safest credit card for online shopping that you can use should also be one that comes with built-in security features such as one-time passwords (OTPs) or dynamic CVVs, thus adding an extra layer of security as you shop.

But how exactly do you determine if shopping from a website or app works better for your needs? Here are some things you should consider to help you decide.

  1. User Experience & Interface

Given the different platforms they’re built for, it’s inevitable that online shopping websites and apps have different layouts as well. E-commerce websites are viewed on larger screens, so they’re usually designed to showcase more listings upon first glance. Meanwhile, since apps are accessed via mobile devices, you can expect more drop-down menus to maximize limited screen space.

Both platforms are mobile-friendly to some extent, as you can always just visit the website using your phone or tablet browser. However, apps are usually designed for a smoother and more seamless experience, sporting features such as one-tap checkout or push notifications for deals for easier shopping.

  1. Performance & Speed

When you’re shopping online, particularly if you’re looking through hundreds of listings, you certainly want a platform that loads fast to avoid frustration. Some websites tend to take longer to load as most rely on real-time data fetching. In comparison, apps generally load faster because they store data locally on your phone, thus leading to quicker access.

If you want to buy something quickly, then using an app may be the better option. On the other hand, if a larger screen can help you go through more listings at once, then the slightly longer loading time of the website can be a small price to pay.

  1. Convenience & Accessibility

Online shoppers have different shopping habits. Some may be frequent shoppers who are always actively looking for deals, while others may only shop occasionally depending on their needs. If you belong to the former group, then shopping apps are more convenient as they offer saved preferences, easy reordering, and personalized recommendations. Meanwhile, if your shopping habits are like the latter group, a website may be the better choice so you wouldn’t have to download an app that’ll just sit unused on your phone.

  1. Exclusive Discounts & Rewards

E-commerce platforms are known to frequently offer deals such as flash sales, piso sales, and double-digit sales. Most of these promotions are available on both their website and app, though there are occasional deals that are exclusive to just one or the other as well.

For example, flash sales occur more often on apps as these aim to encourage quick checkouts, which is more easily done via a mobile device. Some vouchers may also be restricted to app shoppers only, so it’s always a good idea to check between the website and the app to see which one will offer you the better deal.

  1. Checkout & Payment Options

Apps and websites may also provide different ways of paying for your purchase. For instance, because shopping apps are tailored for faster transactions, it makes use of features such as stored payment methods, e-wallet integration, and one-click checkout functionality.

Of course, this isn’t to say that websites can’t accept e-wallets or other payment methods. Rather, instead of it being as seamless as with the app, you’ll need to manually enter your details first which can take a bit more time. Some websites do allow you to save your payment details if you prefer, so you can checkout faster next time.

  1. Security & Privacy

Security is always a top concern for many online shoppers, especially given how common online scams have become. In line with this, the majority of shopping apps employ additional security features such as built-in device authentication (face ID or fingerprint recognition) for payment and login as well as OTP for large purchases.

That said, websites are also safe to transact on. Just make sure the URL starts with “https://” as the “s” means that the connection is secure. Be extra vigilant and watch out for phishing attacks as well by making sure the website you’re shopping from is a legitimate one. Some scammers create fake shopping websites that are just designed to steal your data.

At the end of the day, whether you choose to shop from an app or a website will depend entirely on your preferences and priorities. If you just want broad accessibility without needing to download an app, then a website will suffice. Meanwhile, if you shop frequently, then apps can offer a better experience. Whichever you choose, always remember to shop responsibly and safely to ensure a stress-free shopping experience.
