4 Different Ways Farmers are Incorporating More Tech into Their Business

4 Different Ways Farmers are Incorporating More Tech into Their Business

When you think of farmers, you might picture a simpler time—maybe an image of a person tilling the soil with a trusty old tractor and some elbow grease.

But let’s set the record straight: farming has evolved, and today’s farmers are far from stuck in the past. While sure, if you watch videos from Business Insider, you’ll still find farmers in places like Thailand or India that still use traditional practices, but not all of them (especially in the wast).

Besides, the idea that farms are solely traditional is outdated, and the tech they use is light-years beyond what most people imagine. Farmers today are wielding some seriously cool gadgets and apps that might surprise you, for example, they’re using often using drone to keep an eye on their crops! But there’s so many other ways they’re using tech. So, with all of that said, let’s dive into the tech-savvy world of modern farming.

The Modern Farmer is Using Apps

Now, when it comes to the modern-day farmer, they know how to use a smartphone, they know how to use computers, and they’re 100% tech-literate. So, yes, farmers aren’t just out in the fields anymore; they’ve gone digital. So, for starters, there are a lot of apps out, far more than you might even expect. For example, there are apps for monitoring soil moisture, predicting weather patterns, and even tracking crop growth in real-time.

There are even apps that offer anything and everything to help out. For example, Modern Farmers is a major one that helps foster a community with modern-day farmers (and offers useful tools to have a thriving farm, and there are other apps that allow farmers to map out their fields, monitor crop health, and make data-driven decisions about planting and harvesting. But of course, there are other apps, like for monitoring water use for certain irrigation systems, and this list could go on and on.

Drones

So, this was briefly mentioned earlier, but seriously, this one needs to have another repeat. So, if you thought drones were just for hobbyists and tech enthusiasts, think again. So, drones are becoming essential tools in agriculture, providing aerial views of fields that help farmers monitor crop health, detect irrigation issues, and even apply fertilizers and pesticides with pinpoint accuracy.

Beisdes, just think about it for a moment, why walk and drive everywhere on the farm if you have use a drone, right? Plus, depending on the type of drone, there’s thermal imaging and multispectral cameras— meaning it can spot things that the naked eye can’t see. Be it livestock or crop management, this can honestly a great tool for farmers.

Smart Irrigation

So this is a bit of a newer concept, but tree-oriented farms like vineyards, orchards, nut farms like almond trees, and so on tend to use these smart irrigation systems. Gone are the days of simply turning on a hose and hoping for the best, as smart irrigation is becoming far more prevalent and it’s better for the environment too.

Precision Agriculture

Precision agriculture might sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but it’s very much a reality on today’s farms. Using GPS technology, sensors, and data analytics, farmers can manage their land with pinpoint accuracy.

Most newer tractors and other large machinery can integrate precision agriculture software (granted, mega-farms use these). So, basically, these just involve knowing when the perfect time is to sow seeds, when to apply fertilizers and pesticides, and so on.
