For most small businesses when they think of sustainability, they think of packaging, and sure, this is a very important component, but this isn’t necessarily the only thing you can do (but granted you should because it helps). There’s so much more that should be done.
So, just go ahead and picture this for just a second; you’re out for a walk with your dog, or you’ve just cycled to your favourite shop, only to realise there’s nowhere to lock your bike or sit down for a breather.
Now, does any of this sound familiar? Well, it’s a reality for pedestrians, cyclists, and dog walkers all over urban areas. Businesses often cater to cars with parking spaces and drive-throughs but forget about the people who walk or ride to get there. It doesn’t take much to make your business more inviting for those on foot or on two wheels, and it can bring in a whole new wave of loyal customers.
Now, with all of that said, here are some simple ways small businesses can make their space a haven for pedestrians, cyclists, and even furry friends.
Add Bike Racks for Cyclists
If you live in a more urban area, or at least somewhere that’s slowly becoming more urbanised, then why not consider this one? Bikes are slowly getting more common outside of European countries, so wouldn’t it be a good idea to cater to them?
Just think of it this way; cyclists love convenience, and nothing says “we welcome you” like a proper place to park their bikes. No one wants to awkwardly secure their bike to a wobbly lamppost or risk it toppling over on the pavement. So instead, installing affordable bike racks is an easy win. Usually, the only trick part is the installation, but you might even be able to talk to your local government about getting something installed (or at least footing the bill for installation costs).
So, you just need to put them somewhere visible and close to the entrance, so cyclists don’t have to hunt around for a spot. Just think of it this way; it’s not just practical, it sends a clear message that your business is bike-friendly.
Add a Bench
You know what catches people’s attention? A bench. Yes, seriously, a simple bench outside your business can work wonders. Pedestrians love having a spot to rest, especially if they’ve been carrying heavy bags or chasing after kids all day.
A bench in front of your business says, “Take a moment; we’re happy you’re here.” It gives people a reason to linger outside your shop, and when they do, they’re more likely to pop in. Very rarely will people just hang out there for too long. You can even pair it with some plants or a splash of seasonal decor, and your storefront instantly becomes more inviting.
Usually, a large potted plant (like a large tree in a large pot) looks pretty, but it has this way of making the business look extra welcoming.
Show Dog Walkers Some Love
It’s so important to keep in mind that dog walkers make up a huge part of urban foot traffic, yet they’re often overlooked. It doesn’t take much to make them feel welcome. For example, a simple bowl of water outside your shop can be a lifesaver on warm days. It’s such a small touch, but it leaves a big impression. Who knows, this gesture could mean more business.
If you’ve got the space, you can go one step further with a little hook or post for dog leads, so owners can secure their pets while they come inside. It’s thoughtful, and practical, and shows you care about the community (and their furry companions). But of course, make sure what’s allowed in the city/ town you live in.
Clear Up the Clutter
Now seriously, this is one that’s a pretty big deal yet, this seems to be a major issue. So, nobody enjoys navigating through an obstacle course to get to a shop. If your walkways or entrances are cluttered with signs, bins, or misplaced furniture, it can put people off, especially those pushing prams or using wheelchairs. Overall, it’s rude!
Offer Small Amenities That Make a Difference
Dog bowls and benches were mentioned above, and yeah, they’re both pretty good choices too, but it can always help to offer a little more. No, really, it’s true! Sometimes it’s the little things that stick with people.
For example, a refillable water station, a hand sanitising pump, or even an outdoor bin can make someone’s day just a bit easier. You even consider having an awning over your door or windows as well, so people can stand there until the rain passes.
