Q) Can we have a brief background on your professional journey? What was your journey like to get where you are?
David) Growing up in a family business, I was excited to join the company full-time in 2010, grow, and eventually be the next generation to lead the business. In 2014 it became apparent that would not happen, and if I wanted to own and run a business, I would need to find my path. That path was found, and in June 2014, I became the second franchisee of ohDEER, The leader in All Natural Deer, Tick & Mosquito Control. About to get married, my wife Keri and I packed our bags, sold our house, and moved in with my in-laws to start our entrepreneurial journey. From 1 truck to now 30 vehicles and 4 ohDEER franchise units.
Q) Talk about ohDEER and its services.
David) ohDEER is the leader of All-Natural Deer, Tick & Mosquito Control. It’s that simple, all-natural, all the time! Our goal is to get our clients and the community to Enjoy More Time Outside with a minimal impact on the environment and their families.
Q) What makes ohDEER stand out in the industry?
David) The tick and mosquito industry is rather busy with “backpack, chemical” companies blowing chemicals all over your property and drifting to your neighbors. This is where ohDEER steps up to reduce environmental impact. We only offer minimum-risk FIFRA (25b) pesticides! In addition, we use a target compression spraying system that sprays the product on direct areas to hit the areas where Tick and Mosquitoes live and bread.
Q) What are the major challenges of the industry? How are you tackling them?Q) What are the major challenges of the industry? How are you tackling them?
David) I currently see two major challenges. Educating the clients on the difference between a traditional chemical pesticide service versus a minimum-risk pesticide and the impact on the client’s property, family, and surrounding environment. We have tackled that challenge, but speaking to all clients by phone during the quoting process so they can make the best decision for their family. The second challenge we face is scaling year over year and finding willing and able technicians. This has now actually been a fun challenge to take on head-first. We have redesigned our hiring process with ad creative as well as video hiring ads. Our approach is like no other, from the application process to virtual and in-person interviews. We sell the company to the employee before they sell themselves to us.
Q) What have been the significant impacts of Covid-19 in your industry? How is your company dealing with the crisis?
David) Covid-19 placed tremendous stress on our clients and community, keeping them at home and isolated from friends, family, and public space. At ohDEER, we took the pandemic as an opportunity for our clients and community to Enjoy More Time Outside. Being stuck at home, our clients needed a safe space to play, and we were able to provide them with a service to achieve that. Since the pandemic, this trend has continued as more people have installed outdoor amenities such as patios, pools, swingsets, and firepits.
Q) What are you looking to accomplish in the next five years from a personal as well as professional point of view?
David) I am looking to provide opportunities for others in the next five years. ohDEER has provided my family and me an opportunity to achieve our goals, and I hope to pass the opportunity on to my coworkers, other franchisees, and other business acquaintances. Within five years, I plan to add on additional ohDEER locations, additional home service companies to my portfolio and achieve a liquidity event that will bring the business I am a part of to the next level.
