Amazon has announced that the tech giant will discontinue its app store for Android on 20th August 2025. In a recent notice sent to developers, the organization has confirmed that they will no longer be able to submit any new apps to the platform.
Additionally, the tech giant will also phase out its Coins digital currency, which users could use to purchase various games and apps from the store.
“Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device. We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins program on August 20, 2025,”- the company stated on its support page.
However, Amazon assured its users that any remaining Amazon Coins in their accounts as of August 20, will be refunded. The company also noted that the majority of customers used the Appstore on Amazon devices rather than third-party Android devices.
“We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it,” a company spokesperson said.
Despite this change, the Amazon App Store will continue to function on Fire TV, Fire Tablets, and other Amazon devices.
The tech giant tried to compete with Google and create an alternative app store ecosystem with their version of app store since 2011. It also tried to power its disastrous Fire Phone project with its own app store, which eventually failed spectacularly.
Security concerns have also plagued the platform. In 2023, researchers at McAfee Labs discovered that a malicious app posing as a health tool was spreading malware through the Amazon App Store.
This is not the first time Amazon has discontinued its app store on a platform. In 2024, the company announced that support for its Appstore on Windows—which allowed users to run Android apps—would end on March 5, 2025.
